Party policies

ABORTION

Specific party policy on this issue:

The party has included the following policy in their 2017 general election manifesto:

Labour will continue to ensure a woman’s right to choose a safe, legal abortion – and we will work with the Assembly to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland.

We have also contacted the party to ask them if they have any policies that are not published in their manifesto or on their website that relate to this issue. This party has not come back to us yet with details – please click here to contact them to ask them for their position and let us know if you hear back from them so we can list details here.

Does the party allow for individual MPs to vote according to their conscience on this area?

On recent votes on this issue the party has publicly allowed their MPs to vote according to their conscience.

In 2015 the Labour leadership opposed Fiona Bruce’s amendment to explicitly ban sex-selective abortion. Then Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper wrote to the party’s MPs urging them to vote against it, and, though the party stated there was a free vote, Fiona Bruce said her amendment was defeated “by Labour Party whipping”.

We have contacted the party to establish whether it is party policy to allow MPs to vote according to their conscience on future votes in this area. This party has not come back to us yet with details – please click here to contact them to ask them for their position and let us know if you hear back from them so we can list details here.
